Algeria's Ministry of Energy and Mines says installed capacity of electricity generation will increase by 22%, from 10 230MW to 12 771MW, by 2012. Thirteen power stations totalling 2543MW will be completed in the next two years, to meet a 6% annual growth rate in electricity demand, and allow power export to neighboring countries. A global energy grid was among the futuristic designs of USA engineer, Buckminster Fuller, in the 1950s. Now Sonelgaz, Algeria's state-owned gas and electricity utility, plans to diversify sources of generation by implementing wind and solar energy, allowing export to Europe. The utility is pledged to refurbish the network, reports Industrial Info Resources of Sugar Land, Texas. Investments would total $46-b by 2020, including $3.3-b this year for plant development and national grid work. Morocco and Spain had interconnected grids since 1997 via a 26km, 400kV cable. A submarine 400kV cable may soon connect Algerians and Moroccan grids, enabling access to Spain, reports SPA news.
