Central African Republic ratified the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), which opened for signature in 1996, on 26 May. The treaty bans nuclear tests. Of 182 countries to have signed the treaty, 153 have ratified. According to UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon, CTBT is a fundamental building block for a world free of nuclear weapons.
The treaty also makes a significant contribution to international efforts to promote nuclear disarmament and prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The CTBT Organisation is developing a verification regime to monitor compliance at 337 facilities around the world. The team will monitor underground, oceans and atmosphere for signs of nuclear explosions.
