Massive development is expected in the Waterberg region in Limpopo province, following coal mining and other projects. Exxaro's innovative Eco Housing Project in the Lephalale area of Limpopo Province, is praised for setting a sustainability example, by reducing environmental impacts in the partly pristine, partly compromised, and ecologically sensitive Bushveld ecology. The project combines green building designs, renewable energy sources and water conservation technologies in an affordable mixed housing model. The Exxaro project won second prize in the Nedbank Green Capital Awards in the Sustainability Category, following E Oppenheimer and Son and De Beers Diamond Route tourism project.
