50 Seconds with a GM ...

GM Anglo Gold Ashanti Great Noligwa Mine

Ian Heyns

Your background?

I started off in teaching and then moved to
banking for two years before joining the mining industry. For the past 23 years, I have been with AngloGold Ashanti and served as vice president for human resources for the Africa Operation before taking on the role of GM at Great Noligwa in mid-2008. I am married to Cheryl and we have two children aged 22 and 19.

Your major achievement thus far?

In September, Great Noligwa achieved millionaire status in safety for the tenth time. As I am writing this, on 16 July 2009, we have proven that safety is our first value, since we today achieved two million fatality-free shifts. This extraordinary achievement came about through sheer determination, commitment and teamwork. Improving on our safety performance has been my major achievement thus far.

Where do you see SA mining in a year's time?

The year ahead will be tough and impacted by local legislation, community matters, and the global financial crises. I would expect further consolidation in a number of areas and commodities.

What is your secret for success?

I don't believe in secrets as they do not benefit society. Success is achieved by creating an environment where individuals feel comfortable to contribute to the goals and purposes

If you had to choose another job?

I have always wanted to farm but you need a lot of money to make a little in farming.
