The Association of Mine Financial and Administrative Managers (AMFAM) consists of 350 members at gold, platinum and other metalliferous mining operations. It was established in 1920 as the Association of Mine Secretaries.

The main objectives of the association have always been to originate and promote the general advancement of financial discipline in the mining industry, and to protect the interests of its members.
The Association's objectives are achieved in diverse ways, including conferences and seminars, where information is shared by relevant presentations. Every year, each district produces written projects that are reproduced in books, distributed in the industry as well as to universities and libraries around the world. These books are a permanent record of the association's achievements and progress.

Four districts

The association has four districts; Central district, including Rustenburg and Evander, Free State district, Northern district to accommodate new mines, Western district centered on Carletonville and Klerksdorp.
District meetings are held regularly, and members benefit from sharing information and discussing problems, which are often solved at district level.
The Association has an extremely strong financial base and is able to offer three bursaries per year, requiring recipients to be a dependant of a mining employee, and studying towards an accepted financial qualification at a recognised tertiary institution. Most of the AMFAM bursars have achieved very good results in their studies.

The affairs of the Association are administered by a president and council, elected yearly, and a permanent secretary at offices in the Chamber of Mines building.

In the past 80 years AMFAM and its members have made a significant contribution to the success of the South African mining industry, marked by many milestone achievements.
