The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) was established in 2001 as a catalyst for sustainable performance improvement.
Coordinating Sustainable Performance
Today, we host meetings of 19 mining and metals companies, as well as 30 national and regional mining associations and global commodity associations.
CMM members have committed to the Sustainable Development Framework. In 2010, for the first time, ICMM conducted an assessment of progress that each member company is making against these performance commitments. The result is a member performance table listing achievements of 19 corporate members, to be updated on an annual basis.
Collaboration
Sustainable development requires complementary participation and engagement by companies, governments and civil society. ICMM conducts the majority of its projects in collaboration with other organisations, and, where possible and appropriate, incorporates input from relevant stakeholders.
By working in partnership with others in the sector to develop elements within the work program, ICMM recognises that sustainable development outcomes depend on collaborative actions by governments, companies, communities, labour, and financial institutions.
Industry challenges
The mining and metals industry faces a broad range of challenges in producing essential materials for modern society. We share solutions on economic development, environmental impact management, worker safety, and energy efficiency.
Members around the world
Together, our 19 member companies employ some 800 000 of the estimated 2.5-m people working in mining and metals, with interests at 750 sites in 58 countries. Exploration activities extend this reach significantly.
Through our 30 mining and commodity association members, we reach another 1500 companies. Company members have committed to implementing the ICMM Sustainable Development Framework and a number of supporting position statements.
