The South African Coal Ash Association (SACAA) provides a forum for exchange of scientific and technical information on ash utilisation.
Constituted in 1987, SACAA has played an important role in establishing a Coal Combustion Product (CCP) industry in South Africa. The aim of the SACAA is to promote and encourage use of CCPs where technically feasible, sustainable, and economically viable.
Membership is open to individuals, companies, academics, non-governmental organisations, and regulatory authorities in government. Along with other international ash associations, SACAA established the Worldwide Coal Ash Council (WWCAC) that provides members access to an international database of information. CCP residues
Coal Combustion Products is the generic term for residues emanating from coal combustion. CCP variety in any process depends on:
* combustion technology, like pulverised coal, fluidised bed
* collection technology, like bag filters, electrostatic precipitators
* treatment of flue gases, like desulphurisation, ammoniation.
CCPs are green
Significant environmental benefits accrue from using CCPs. Every ton used to replace cement, avoids release of one ton of CO2, a greenhouse gas.
Other benefits include;
* incorporation in soil to improve fertility
* pasteurisation of sewage sludge
* immobilisation of toxic elements
* counteracting acid mine drainage
* rehabilitation of mine spoil and slimes dams
* backfilling of mines to prevent subsidence
Given South Africa's abundant coal resources, large quantities of CCPs are produced in electricity generation by Eskom, and liquid fuel production by Sasol.
