Malawi is not well known as a mining centre, but there is an operating uranium mine, owned by Paladin Energy.
Kayelekera mine and plant is in northern Malawi, and was commissioned in 2009. Project cost was US$ 215-m.
There are three other mining projects in Malawi. Livinstonia Uranium mine is in the reserves development stage, while Machinga and Kanyika rare earth mines are in exploration stage.
