Tanzania is urging East African countries to start developing nuclear power, arguing that it is the cheapest source of electricity in the region. At the East African Power Industry Convention held in Nairobi in early September, Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission director general, Iddi Mkilaha, said that conventional and renewable power would not be able to meet the energy needs of the region. “Coal and natural gas are sustainable in a limited time span but [a] long term solution to [the] energy deficit can only be met by nuclear energy.”
In addition, mining company Mantra Tanzania Limited is expected to start mining uranium by 2012 at Namtumbo, in the southern part of Tanzania.
